The Bible is reliable from the standpoint of Astronomy

"To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard." Psalm 19: 1-3

Of all the fields of science, astronomy captures the imagination like no other. Think of all the interest there is each time NASA launches another probe to Mars or when the Space Shuttle lifts off. It is the subject of most science fiction movies and novels.

What is not fiction is mankind's desire to search the heavens - and as man has searched the heavens, he indeed has found that the "heavens declare the glory of God"! Not just in its vastness or incredible beauty, but also in that it testifies to the accuracy of Scripture.

The modern field of astronomy can perhaps trace its roots back to Galileo who pointed the first telescopes toward the heavens in roughly 1609. (Note: no one knows for sure who invented the first telescope - some attribute the invention to a Dutchman named Lippershey - see Did Galileo Invent the Telescope?)

The past few hundred years of gazing upward have revealed a number of discoveries of which the Bible testified several thousand years in advance.
