The Bible is reliable from the standpoint of Medicine and Biology

"At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father's house for three months. But when he was set out, Pharaoh's daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds." Acts 7: 20 - 22

According to the passage above, Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians-well, let's see what some of this wisdom was. The following is taken from the Ebers Papyrus, the oldest and arguably the most important preserved medical record of antiquity. This dates back to circa 1552BC (or within a few years of Moses's birth) and would appear to be a complete record of known Egyptian medical knowledge.

Consider the Egyptian remedy for healing an infected splinter wound - the doctor should apply an ointment comprised of worm's blood mixed with the dung of a donkey (ugh!).
Or how about the Egyptian doctor's prescription on what to do when you are constipated - take cat dung and put it on some bread and also take a swig of beer (aye yai yai)
If you are losing your hair, don't go to the "Hair Club for Men" or try Rogaine -take decomposing fat from a cat, a crocodile, a snake and mix it with honey and throw in some crushed donkey teeth for good measure.
If you want to stop a baby from crying - make a bottle with milk and for added flavoring, include fly dung (how do you get fly dung anyway?).
Grant Jeffrey, The Signature of God (pg. 141 – 142)

Before we make too much fun of the ancient Egyptians, remember this was the most advanced society on the face of the earth 1400 years BC.

We know that Moses authored the first 5 books of the Bible. You'd think that some of these crazy ideas would have made their way into the Bible. The fact is that none of these notions made their way into Scripture.

Why do we find these Egyptian remedies so appalling? It's because we know about the existence of what? Germs! How long have we known about the existence of germs? Not very long-

Have you ever heard the story of Austrian doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis?

"Remember Ignaz Semmelweis? Of course you don't. But you're in his debt nonetheless, because it was Dr. Semmelweis who first demonstrated over a hundred years ago that routine handwashing can prevent the spread of disease. (It was another 50 years before the importance of handwashing was widely accepted!) "Dr. Semmelweis worked in a hospital in Vienna whose maternity patients were dying at such an alarming rate they begged to be sent home," said Julie Gerberding, M.D., director of The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Hospital Infections Program. "Most of those dying had been treated by student physicians who worked on cadavers during an anatomy class before beginning their rounds in the maternity ward." Because the students didn't wash their hands between touching the dead and the living - handwashing was an unrecognized hygienic practice at the time-pathogenic bacteria from the cadavers regularly were transmitted to the mothers via the students' hands. "The result was a death rate five times higher for mothers who delivered in the hospital than for mothers who delivered at home" said Dr. Gerberding. In an experiment considered quaint at best by his colleagues, Dr. Semmelweis insisted his students wash their hands before treating the mothers - and deaths on the maternity ward fell fivefold. "This was the beginning of infection control," Dr. Gerberding said. "It was really a landmark achievement, not just in healthcare settings, but in public health in general because today the value of handwashing in preventing disease is recognized in the community, in schools, in child care settings, and in eating establishments"

In fact, we've only even known of the existence of germs for a little over 150 years (when the famous French Chemist Louis Pasteur made the discovery)
